The Space Between What Was and What Will Be

🌞 Holy Moments in Ordinary Days: A Summer Reflection Series
Week 7
There’s a strange tension in the “in-between.”
It’s not the starting line, where everything is new and exciting. And it’s not the finish line, where the prayers are answered and the doors swing wide. It’s that middle stretch... Where the lease is almost up but you still don’t know where you’ll live next. Where the job you left no longer defines you, but the next one hasn’t shown up yet. Where your heart has healed enough to be open again, but the right person hasn’t crossed your path.
It’s the space between what was and what will be.
And it can feel… endless.
I know that space well. It’s the season where you refresh your email too much, hoping for that “We’d love to offer you the position” subject line. Where you scroll Zillow and Apartments.com at midnight, saving places you can’t afford yet but have already mentally decorated on Pinterest. Where you see “just listed” houses disappear in 48 hours and wonder if yours will ever come along. Where you cheer for friends’ engagements, gender reveals, and “We closed on the house!” posts, and you mean it, but still quietly wonder when it will be your turn. Where your coffee budget somehow increases because your best thinking happens with an iced latte in hand.
It’s tempting to rush through seasons like this. To fill every silence with podcasts and playlists. To say yes to things you know aren’t right just to make the waiting feel shorter. But I’m learning that sometimes, the in-between is where God is doing the most important work.
It’s where you learn that your worth isn’t tied to your job title or relationship status. It’s where your faith grows roots deeper than your feelings. It’s where you find joy that isn’t dependent on a “next chapter” update for Instagram.
And here’s what I’m slowly accepting: The in-between isn’t wasted. It’s holy ground. Because one day, you’ll look back and realize... It wasn’t just the bridge to the blessing. It was part of the blessing itself.
Scripture to Sit With
Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)
“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice.Blessed are all who wait for him!”
Pause + Ponder
Where do you feel “stuck in the middle” right now? What has God shown you in this season that you wouldn’t have learned otherwise? Could the in-between be shaping you for the thing you’ve been praying for?
Small Step This Week
Practice presence. Instead of only looking for what’s next, notice one thing today that’s good. Right here, right now. Write it down. Say thank you for it. And trust that the same God who is with you here will be with you there.
