This isn’t coming from someone who has it all together... just someone who knows the struggle and believes God is worth it.
Living a Christ-like life sounds simple in theory: love God, love people, reflect Jesus. But when it comes down to the everyday reality, when temptation is everywhere... it’s not so easy.
If you’ve ever found yourself battling between your desire to follow Jesus and your very real human cravings, whether it’s drinking, sex, partying, or anything else... you’re not alone. In fact, that struggle is part of what makes the Christian life real.
Why Is Living Christ-Like So Hard?
The Bible never promises that following Jesus would be easy. In fact, it promises the opposite:
“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” - Matthew 26:41
Our culture normalizes things that scripture tells us to be careful with. Social drinking is everywhere. Sex outside of marriage is not only common, but expected. Even pride, anger, and selfishness are glorified in many ways. Trying to be Christ-like today means actively swimming against the current.
What the Bible Says About Drinking
Drinking itself isn't a sin. Jesus drank wine, and Paul recommended it for health reasons (1 Timothy 5:23). But the Bible is very clear that drunkenness leads to sin and separation from God:
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” - Ephesians 5:18
“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” - Proverbs 20:1
The real question isn’t, “Can I drink?” It's, “Is my drinking honoring God, or pulling me away from him?”
What About Sex? Why Is It Labeled As Sinful?
Sex is not dirty, wrong, or shameful. It’s a gift from God, designed to unite two people within the safety and commitment of marriage (Genesis 2:24).
However, the Bible warns that sex outside of marriage can cause deep emotional, relational, and spiritual wounds:
“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” - Hebrews 13:4
“Flee from sexual immorality... your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.” - 1 Corinthians 6:18-19
God’s commands aren’t about taking away joy; they’re about protecting it. Still, many Christians wrestle with this area of their lives. You’re not condemned for struggling, but you are called to be intentional about pursuing holiness, even when it’s hard.
Can I Struggle and Still Be Christ-Like?
The short answer: YES. Being Christ-like doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being honest about your weakness and staying dependent on Jesus.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9
God doesn’t disqualify you because of your temptations. He meets you in them. He helps you overcome them, not through shame, but through grace.
So What Does It Look Like to Live Christ-Like With Temptation Everywhere?
✔️ Stay Aware ~ Recognize the areas where you’re tempted most.
✔️ Stay Connected ~ Stay in prayer, in the Word, and in godly community.
✔️ Stay Humble ~ Understand you need God’s strength every single day.
✔️ Stay Focused ~ Ask yourself: “Is this drawing me closer to Jesus or pulling me away?”
You won’t always get it right. You’ll have moments where you stumble. But every day you choose Jesus, even in the middle of struggle, you’re becoming more like him.
Grace Over Perfection
Living Christ-like isn’t about flawlessly avoiding sin. It’s about seeking God with an honest heart, repenting when you mess up, and trusting that his grace is enough. The daily temptations are real. The struggle is real. But so is God's love, his patience, and his power to change you from the inside out.
You don’t have to be perfect to reflect Christ. You just have to be willing.
